Accelerated Reader

Reading is a vital skill for any young person and at Matravers we feel it is important to develop this in all of our students. This is why we will be launching the Accelerated Reader Programme in March 2015.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor student’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his or her own level and reads it at his or her own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) AR gives both student and teacher feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set targets and direct on-going reading practice.

This is a fantastic programme, which has been used successfully at many schools. As part of the programme students are STAR tested to establish reading ages. STAR Reading is a computerised reading assessment that uses computer-adaptive technology. Questions continually adjust to your child’s responses. If the student’s response to a question is correct, the difficulty level of the next question is increased. If the student misses a question, the difficulty level of the next question is reduced. The test uses multiple-choice questions and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Star testing will be taking place in library lessons from the week beginning Monday 2 February 2015. Students will be told about the testing in assembly and although it will be taken in exam conditions, students should not be concerned about the outcome. The test simply gives us

benchmark mark data, which we can use to help your son or daughter progress.

We will also be holding a Parents’ Literacy Day in the Learning Resource Centre on the Thursday 5 March 2015. This will give you the opportunity to come into school and see the scheme in action, as well as visit our new LRC and choose some reading books with your children.

There is also a Parent Portal that you will be able to use to see how your child is progressing and we will send more details out about this in Term 5.

Steve Voakes visited Matravers  on Tuesday 17th March.

He came in to give the students a very special lunchtime talk about his books and how he became a writer.  The students really enjoyed the visit and learnt a lot about the craft of writing.

He also did a creative writing workshop with the students from Years 12 and 13. This was a fantastic opportunity to help these budding writers who are currently working on their creative writing coursework.
