Governor Vacancies

The Board of Governors at Matravers is made up of the following categories of governor:

2 Staff Governors (including the Headteacher)

1 Local Authority Governor

2 Partnership Governors

2 Parent Governors

7 Co-opted Governors

The total capacity of the Board is therefore 14 governors, but commonly, one or two of these roles may either be held vacant or will be used for developing new appointees.

We currently have co-opted governor vacancies on the Board of Governors. Co-opted governors can be anyone with the relevant skills, including parents of children at the school, and local authority or school employees, as well as other members of the community.

Why become a Governor?

Becoming a school Governor involves taking on one of the most important and valuable roles in education – the strategic leadership of a school. Governors are one of the biggest groups of volunteers in the country. The purpose of the Board of Governors is to help the school to provide the best possible education for its pupils. It sets the school aims and policies together with the Headteacher, although the Head is responsible for day-to-day management.

Who might apply:

The Board of Governors is looking to broaden its skills base, and Guy Davies, Chair of the Board, would like to invite people from the local community who may be able to bring valuable skills to the school, to consider putting themselves forward for the vacancies.

Successful candidates will share the vision and values of the board and be able to take a strategic view of the place of secondary education in the Westbury Area. We would especially welcome applications from people with experience of leadership and management in the public or private sectors. Experience of school governance would be an advantage, but induction and training will be given.
