Homework

Guidance

Homework is essential for consolidating and developing learning made in the classroom and developing an ethos where pupils expect to have to work outside the school day.

You will be able to view what homework your child has been set alongside completion dates in Class Charts. There is a link published on the Matravers School website for parents and pupils to access Class Charts: Matravers School - Homework. Pupils should also be recording homework tasks in their planner.

It is not compulsory for all homework to be marked by staff, but staff will check homework completion as well as mark and give feedback to key pieces of homework that is completed throughout a term.

Homework at Matravers will in the main focus on consolidation of work completed in the classroom and consist of retrieval based tasks to support learning and retention of knowledge. Retrieval activities are where pupils have to use past knowledge and skills to complete tasks or answer questions. This supports a pupil’s memory retention of key knowledge and skills.

Non completion of work will be tracked by your child’s teachers. If there is a repeated pattern of non –completion, your child’s teacher, tutor or Progress Leader will contact you to discuss why homework is not being completed and discuss how we can support you as a parent to ensure that your child completes homework regularly.

Following this conversation, and if there is no improvement, your son/daughter’s teacher, tutor or Progress Leader will set a detention. This detention time will be used to give your child the opportunity to ‘catch up’ on any missed homework.

Please find below the guidance for the frequency in which homework will be set in each department.

Please note, in practical based subjects, H/W tasks may not be retrieval based activities but may include tasks that further build on or reinforce skills that have been taught in lessons.
