Additional Studies and Experiences

Being a sixth form student at Matravers is not just about studying A Levels. We will be providing a range of other opportunities for learning and personal development in order to help students prepare for life and the demands of Higher Education.

Students will also follow a programme devised to help them make the transition to independent study and adult life. This will include:

  • Study and Revision Skills
  • Citizenship, Political and Social Issues
  • Philosophy and Aesthetics
  • Ethics
  • Personal Development

Careers and Higher Education guidance will be provided, starting in the second term of Year 12, with guidance and monitoring by tutors. Students will begin their research into available courses and opportunities, so that we are ready to submit UCAS forms or other applications at an early stage in Year 13. They will also visit universities and attend the higher education conference held annually at the University of Bath. We also have an Oxbridge programme for students capable of the highest A Level grades.

Students will have the opportunity to experience links with business and industry through work experience placements. All students will take part in Community Action. This may involve providing learning support for younger students at Matravers or at local primary schools, or working with those in need in the wider community. Students will also be expected to organise their own fund-raising activities for charity.

Opportunities for sport will be provided on a weekly basis, although there will be no compulsory programme for students. Visits to the theatre, cinema, exhibitions and galleries will be offered as support for academic studies and for general enrichment. Debate and discussion will be encouraged through our own programme and through visiting speakers. In addition students will be supported to organise any other activities in which they wish to participate.

Sixth form students at Matravers will be representatives of the school and role models for younger students, and will be given responsibility for managing their own area, their common room and its facilities. Members of the sixth form are appointed by staff and students to become the Senior Student Team and this group will work closely with the Head of Sixth Form and Senior Staff in making decisions relevant to the school, the sixth form and their development. We want creative thinking, active involvement and participation so that students get the most from their experience as sixth form students at Matravers.
