Non-Parent Governor Information

The Matravers School Board of Governors is made up of 14 Governors from various sections of the community. They include two partnership governors, and seven co-opted governors, details of which are explained below.

From time to time there are vacancies for both partnership and co-opted governors. We are very keen to encourage staff, parents and other members of the community to nominate suitable people to fill these vacancies. Details of what you would need to do to be nominated are attached.

Partnership Governors: The Board of Governors must ask parents of registered pupils at the school, and others in the community it considers appropriate to provide nominations for partnership governors. (Parents of registered pupils at the school, staff eligible to be staff governors, elected members of the LA and those employed by the LA in connection with education functions are not eligible to be partnership governors).

Co-opted governors: These are appointed by the Board of Governors to provide skills, experience and/or knowledge which it believes will be beneficial to the GB as a whole. They may be members of staff at the school, parents of registered students, or members of the wider community.

Governors do not run the school day to day, as their role is at the strategic or policy-making level in the school. Being a governor does take up time. The Board of Governors meets six times a year, and in addition, governors usually serve on one or more committees, each also meeting six times a year. Meetings are generally held on Tuesday evenings. You would need to be able to set aside time to be an effective governor: to prepare for and attend meetings, to carry out occasional visits during the school day, and to undertake training. Appointments are made on four year terms, although governors may of course resign at any time during their term.

If you would like to find out more about what being a governor at this school is like, please leave a message with your contact details for Mrs Jessica Yeatman, the clerk to the governors, and she will arrange for a governor to call you for a chat. Messages may be left at reception or emailed to

If you would like to take the opportunity to put yourself forward as a candidate, please complete and return the attached form to the clerk within the timescales indicated in the ‘governor vacancies’ section. If there are more candidates than vacancies, there will need to be a selection process, and we will contact you to let you know about the arrangements. Even if there are no current vacancies, we are always happy to talk to people who might be interested in joining the Board of Governors in the future.
