Able, Gifted and Talented students attending Matravers sixth form have the opportunity to apply for a place on the West Wilts Federation international leadership conference to Malaysia. The Federation has a link with KYUEM, which is a private sixth form boarding college around 70km north of Kuala Lumpur, sponsored by a large Malaysian building conglomerate. The majority of the students who attend KYUEM are sponsored through industry links and they aim to win places at British universities, their attendance at which is also sponsored. As a result of this, there is a strong focus on sciences and engineering; also, the students are extremely hard-working and very motivated to succeed, and we find that this has a very positive impact on the Wiltshire students we take to work with them. As the Malaysian students almost all end up in Britain as under-graduates the links are maintained way past the conference itself.

Culturally, Malaysia is a very interesting country for our students to visit. They experience living in a Muslim country, but also get to see something of the Indian and Chinese cultures, as these nationalities make up roughly one third of the population. Cultural experiences have included Diwali and visits to Chinese temples, for example, as well as KL's Museum of Islamic Art.
